I got a trimix cert in 2008. for three years I looked and waited for the comp that would do everything I wanted, had user replaceable battery, and was rugged. When I saw it I knew it was what I wanted. Got to play with one at a show in ohio and within 15 minutes was planning dives, setting mixes, and scrolling through the dive log. The manual looks like it was written by divers not lawyers. So after saving, selling, and some tax refund money I got my Shearwater Predator. And if I would ever need a second comp another Predator is the only thing I'd look at.

thanks for all the input guys, I'm def gonna read thru some manuals and stuff. Just watched the video on the predator and it looks like its everything you will ever need a computer to do hah

If you are looking at the Predator look at the Petrel from Shearwater as well. Less $$ and basically a combination of Predator 1 and 2

I've been eying the liquid vision kaon at $825 looks to be one heck of a computer and their lynx should be out soon at $900 without transmitter. I like that they are full featured. you need to pay extra to unlock each feature on other products. I like cold water wrecks and would prefer the tap screen rather than buttons with smurf gloves on. The x1 is the best of the bunch but again it's not quite pay as you go but it's pay a lot and you can't use it till you pay more for the software. I still haven't pulled the trigger yet so I am very interested in this thread.

the petrel looks like a great computer as well as the kaon. at $825 for the Kaon that looks like a good quality computer that isn't going overboard, but the only downside is that it doesn't do trimix (From what I see online) so if in the future you ever decide to go that route then need to buy something different.
The Petrel on the other hand does trimix for not much more $950 and seems to do a bit more.
Got a lot of research to do before goin in and actually getting one. Anyone that has multi gas computer please feel free to chime in.

+1
This is the puter I dive and it is the one every one loves to hate. Can be had lightly used for around 400.00 on the boards, fully unlocked for oc/tmx. Personaly I love the auto gas switch, others hate it.

I would also look closely at the customer service and support reputations of the various companies you're considering, giving at least equal weight to that factor as to any other. A computer with the market's best set of features isn't worth much, IMO, if its maker isn't interested in making sure it works reliably for you in the years to come.

Shearwater any day, any dive!!
