I'm in the process of purchasing all my own gear and I'm wondering where/how everyone keeps there "extras". Be detailed in your explanations, I'm new!

A BPW has holes around the edges to attach small stainless steel C-clamps. Two of these on the right side hold your cannister light nicely. Two on the left side hold your argon bottle.

There is a slit in the lower back of your backplate, where you can attach a crotch strap, however I prefer to attach the strap to the weight belt instead. You really do not need one of these unless you have a dive scooter (DPV).

Normally you will mount 4 D-rings with 4 keepers on your webbing to form 2 shoulder strap attachments and 2 waist belt attachments. These can be used to mount deco bottles, split left and right. The left waist belt D-ring is also used to attach your SPG, with 6 inches of cave line to give you extra play so you can read it.

That about covers it. You can improvise from there any way that you like.

The classic configuration uses a canister light on the right hip, and cylindrical backup lights clipped to each chest dring, and secured with essentially large rubber bands to the lower part of the shoulder straps.

For Open water diving a decent light with a bolt snap clipped off to one chest dring is a reasonable place to start.

You can clip off a smb to the "butt dring" and or add bungee loops on the bottom of the plate to hold lift bag.

Thigh Pockets on the exposure suit are nice too. I personally prefer not to add any pockets to the waist strap of the harness, as this will interfere with my can light.

Since I noticed in the DSS forum that you already ordered a DSS rig (good choice), I just wanted to point out that it will come with the bands used to attach (cylindrical)lights on each shoulder strap. As far a pocket choices, there are many. Just as an example:
Zeagle Sport Pocket Accessory, Zeagle Accessories, Zeagle, Zeagle Sport Pocket Accessory
That pocket will fit on any 2 inch webbing (which is the size of your harness waist strap). I also prefer pockets on the exposure suit, but since you are just getting started and probably don't have a can light, you could use a pocket like this on the right side waist band.
You can also attach an smb to the plate if needed.
If you have specific items in mind you could always ask for advice on places to store those items.

Hope that helps

I have pockets on my dry suits, and for diving wet, I use X-shorts. Anything I need to carry, other than backup lights (which are affixed to the chest D-rings) and a reel (which rides on my left hip D-ring) goes in my pockets.

I have a couple of small OMS pockets on my BP waist belt. In one pocket, I have an otter box with wallet/keys. In the other pocket, I have a signal mirror and dye marker. I have a whistle on my shoulder strap d-ring. I have a flashlight and reel on my gun. I have a popper float (CO2 lift bag/signal device) on my weight belt (Freedive fish float).

For night dives, I have an additional light on my shoulder strap and left wrist. Carry gun with small light in right.

I have a DiveRite Transplate SS BP with STA, 2" crotch strap, and backpad. I do not attach anything behind me on the BP or crotch strap. My stringer is on my waist belt and my camera can be attached to my shoulder strap.

When diving wet I have a pocket that I put on my waist for my smb, spreel, mirror and whistle. I use a std. config for lights, with mounting them on the shoulder straps, one is a backup the other is an emergency strobe, my primary is a can light which is on my waist.

I use a DR thigh pocket on the waistbelt (I don't have a can light) in which I carry my SMB, whistle, mirror, Dive Alert, backup computer, and shears. Most of it is attached with a bungee loop and bolt snap to the pocket's inner D-ring so I don't lose things if I need to fish something out. I could probably fit a small light in there, too, but usually it's on a chest D-ring.

Cheers,
Lilla
