Hello to all!

After recently coming back from my holiday in sunny Menorca i have been thinking about taking up Scuba as a serious hobby. I was wondering what you guys think i should do, my main problem is I'm only 15 years old and although this is old enough by PADI's standards, I was wondering what you guys thought. I would hope to do it with one of my school friends. I have enough money saved in my bank to finance the OW Cert but have been told in order to keep it i need to dive atleast once every 6 months, is this true?

I would also hope a friend from school could be my dive buddy once i passed, although i wouldnt feel comfortable with just us two and i'm sure he'd also feel the same and think at the beginning we should be diving with older diver's with much more experience than ourselves, im pretty sure a local Diving Club could help us out there.

I have previously dove twice before:

1. Turkey. This dive would be classed as, i guess, a "Try Dive" we put on all the equipment and once the dive started we followed the Instructor and each person had another instructor following behind using the er, 'Buoyancy Buttons'. We went to a depth of about 10m if i remember correctly.. and did things like throwing stones to each other, feeding handfuls of bread to the fish and watching the main instructor show off my making 'air rings'. I really enjoyed the dive.

2. Menorca. Another "Try Dive" but this time we controlled our on buoyancy using the buttons. There was a main instructor whom we followed, another bringing up the rear and another snorkeling on the top incase anyone paniced and made like a trident to the surface ;) . Although prior to going further out to see we did mask clearing exercises, and taking out and putting back in the regulator underwater. On this dive we had much more control although i did seem to have a problem "steering" and had a little difficulty getting my buoucany right.

Another thing on my mind is i've seen many posts on the forum about people having 'perforated eardrums' and other ear problems after their OW Dives or at some point, is this really going to happen or can it be avoided? I didnt have any problem with my ears during my two previous dives, i just made a habit of watching the instructor and equalising whenever he did.

So, Any advice you guys can give me on getting started and about the OW Cert or diving in general is tremendously appreciated, hopefully my long post didnt bore you too much!

Injuries are rare, fun is abundant. Make sure your money is too ;)

Hi Greeny,

I would strongly encourage you to get certified!! If you didn't have any problems with your eardrums on your previous dives I doubt it will be an issue for you. I have a 15 year old who is certified and really loves it!

There are a number of agencies that teach diving, the largest of which is PADI - http://www.padi.com/

Scuba Schools International is also good - http://www.ssiusa.com/

Both are very reputable agencies. It would be good if you could start diving with older, more experienced divers initially, but that would happen naturally as you become a participant in the diving community. In fact, I'm sure that there is someone from across the pond (living here in southern California) willing to get you going. Also, a good dive instructor will encourage your continued participation after getting certified by taking you diving and introducing you to different diving experiences.

Good luck!!

Hey. Im 16 now, and have been diving for 4 years (wow! that long? what's wrong with me:-) ) If you dive safely, not take any risks until you are compleatly comftrable with everything you aer doing, you will be fine.
I reccomend you stay with an Instructor/ DM for as long as you can, and not go on dives w/o one fora year or so.
Diving is a great hobby, and has helped me with "life skills"...
I recomend you look into toon diving trips. I am constantly saying this, but I highly reccomend two trips in the carribien. Action Quest and Broadreach are both incredible programs, and you can get your basic certification there.
Look into local diving clubs and orginizations! The water may be a little cold, but I am sure there are others at the same stage as you are nearby.

good luck! and PM or IM me anytime if u have any questions.

Thanks for all the replies so far guys!

but I highly reccomend two trips in the carribien.

That sure sounds like a fantastic place to dive dsaxe, but unfortunately i live in the UK, so going to the carribean is quite a trip :D

I'll definately look into it more seriously..

Any more advice is still appreciated! =)
