I see divers all the time take their masks off after a dive and it looks like their face is permanently damaged with lines from their mask. I see this with all experience levels.

I suppose as long as your mask doesn't leak and you don't mind having the lines on your face..all is well.

But for those who want to do away with the post dive lines and possibly increase your comfort with your mask. Take some advice from someone who doesn't surface with any mask lines.

1) Adjust your mask strap so you can move it up and down on the back of your head easily while wearing your mask. However, it should stay in place on its own. Your mask strap shouldnt be soo tight that its snug on the back of your head.

2) With the mask on your face, you should be able to pull your mask far away from your face with little effort.

3) Make sure to equalize your mask throughout the dive. Sometimes I catch myself descending a little and not really feeling the mask getting tighter. I just exhale out of my nose every soo often...its just part of my routine now.

Those are the only 3 things I do to ensure I dont surface looking like an alien. For some it's just a cosmetic part of diving, some have never given it a thought.

Remember, the tigther the mask is on your face the more likely it is to leak.

Hope this is helpful to some.

thanks Jep, since mine always leaks, I don't have this problem, alway purging it

I posted about the Mares liquidskin mask in another thread the other day, so I'm going to sound like a mares ad, but I LOVE this mask. It is way softer than other mask skirts, and I've never had mask lines after surfacing while wearing this mask.

I hear that wearing it on your forehead is a good idea.

what do you know, young'un???

(mwah, charles! ;) )

Interesting, I have never looked in a mirror after diving and my buddies would let me look like a fool anyway.

I wear mine snug but I think it is tighter than you suggest. No leaks though.
