We have finally decided to go to Fantasy Island in about five weeks (party of five dives).
1) Could you guys help with the room selection and what do to and not to do while at FI?
2) Is there anything else on the island outside of FI we should consider doing? such as sports activity, restaurants (i.e. hole in the wall, I hear they have a great steak and lobster deal),and ..
3) Should we consider renting a car for going to West End?

Thank you for your help

Yes, go to west end. Don't rent car.... take taxi.

You've hit the right forum, but take a crack at a quick search within this forum. Roatan is likely one of the single most popular islands represented on ScubaBoard, but because of the nature of the place, questions like yours are asked and answered quite a bit.... that, and I noticed several of your posts previously in this forum looking for precisely this trip that you have now "voted" in.

In early May, you'll see the water column filled with little critters being eaten and trying to make other litlle critters. Love is on the air... errr... water. Yep, you're swimming in it!

Give your DM one day (after you've sorted out your diving skills). If he isn't showing you Seahorses and Pipefish, jump ship and go with a different DM. If he's busy stabbing Lionfish or feeding fish from a baggie, find a better guy. If he's pointing out all the cool little stuff, enjoy the ride and thank him with a good tip. The full Moon is May 17th, so there will be a peak in activity coming up to and just after that point.

This is a great period of time to go night diving, and at FI you'll have 5 opportunities to try it. Get a DM for the first time if you need to, after that, if you feel comfortable, the night dive from FI is pretty easy to navigate!

Drive a car? Well, as said above, most of the old timers of Roatan understand what they are seeing, hearing, and in some cases- found out the hard way. Do not drive a rental vehicle (of any kind). In the long run, hiring an English speaking driver (insist on that) is much preferred. Again, do a search in this forum for all the gory details. You're on vacay, act like it.

On your first dive day, make the time to do a day shore dive on the Prince Albert so you have your bearings. On subsequent days load an extra tank for the afternoon boat dive and have them drop you on the wreck or one of the walls on either side. This is a great way to get a fourth dive in, simply follow the lines back to the gazebo and the launch will pick you up and take you back to the dive shop.

This is a great night dive. We did five night dives during our stay and they were great.

Since no one else has answered your first question

I personally prefer the 2nd floor just down from the diningroom. We were in 216 and loved it. No one making noise above you. Don't get wet going to and from breakfast or dinner. 216 is also close enough to go back to your room after breakfast and before heading down to the boats.

Maybe the other direction would be good too. Half way between the diningroom and the dive shop; but then you overlook the pool not the beach which I prefer. Plus too far down towards the dive shop and you can't get there totally covered which is a pain if it is raining. :(

Hole in the Wall is great, but lobster season is closed and all of the restaurants are supposed be done serving it by now. I'm sure there will be something else to go with the filet.
