I'm a Fish!
Good day folks,
PURP wants to do a used gear drive to be able to outfit some of our less fortunate prospects that don’t have and gear and or funds, but would love to participate. We have a lot of young adults starting out in life that are interested in our project that fit this profile.

A little background.
We have a member who took the reins and organized her own removal event involving going out on a minus tide during the king tides and rock picking urchins out of tide pools. She had many people who participated and it was hugely successful. Most of them aren’t divers, but they are young environmentally minded outdoor enthusiasts and wanted to help.
The problem is many of them were ill prepared for exposure to cold water even though they were tide pooling. There is a lot of structure with rocks and low areas some of which are knee to waist deep. Jeans and rubber boots don’t cut it. A few people had on wetsuits but the majority did not.

So my idea is to help them out and try to gear them up with at least wetsuits and booties. We are all volunteer doing this on our own so we’re asking for used gear donations.
We’re primarily looking for wetsuits, wetsuit bottoms, booties, gloves. They can be in any condition, worn out and no good for diving is fine. We are going to do a wetsuit repair clinic at the dive shop.
Maybe you have something that has been hanging in a closet for years that you will never use again and never be able to sell, but you could donate it instead!
Better than it going into a landfill if someone can get more life out of it!

The next step would be if some of these people got really enthusiastic and decided to give freediving/snorkeling a try. Then we would advance our gear drive to include used fins, masks, weights, hoods.
So if you have any of that stuff you would be willing to donate that would be awesome too!

We are not interested in any scuba gear like old regulators or BCD’s at this time, only items listed above.

If you have something that you’d like to donate to our purple urchin removal cause you can PM me here and I will give you my contact information.

Thank you so much for your generosity!

Eric, if you can find someone that would be able to drive a box of stuff up from east bay/south bay, i've got some old stuff I could donate. a 7mm suit, some gloves, and probably some hoods/boots also.

@runsongas Wow, thank you!
I will contact the gal who runs her Minus tide tidepooling trips and let her know. She’s located in Berkeley.
I’ll contact her and PM you with her info and put you two in touch 👍

I will be in touch after digging thru the gear bins.
At the very least there is a 7mm farmer john that needs to find a home.

And this is how you invigorate the peoples interest in diving Mr President

All the way with Erics only way to dive second hand gear drive yay yay yay

I hope you don't turn orange too dude!

And this is how you invigorate the peoples interest in diving…
Precisely!
You enable them to at least participate in some capacity, dress them up in rubber and let them climb around the rocks. It’s great fun for a day. Then they see the pathway to begin freediving so they can be more like the bigger kids and be a “real diver”. Then they see the grown ups hauling in big bags of urchins with their tanks and cool looking regulators. They decide they want to be more like them so they begin to romance the idea about getting into scuba diving. We’re it for them as far as local diving, we’re the only game in town.
Yes it’s all our diabolical plot to get more young people involved in scuba through the guise of a well concealed plot masquerading as an urchin cause 😁
