I have heard of a few interesting dive shop names but
~~~ Dad's Auto Repair and SCUBA School ~~???
In SoCal we had a "Dive and Ride" dive shop...The owner sold diving equipment from his used car lot. He didn't last long
This is the reason that LA Co Underwater Instructor's Association promoted the standardization and certification of dive shops. Around the time of your training LA Co developed a lose knit association which, although they had cards printed and shoulder patches produced , it was just too early in the market place with out any enforcing powers . I had a patch which I never used and unfortunately it was stolen from my home so I can't at this time recall its name...
Can you?
--- Seems everything began with LA Co and it did ... John Cronin & his PADI crew picked up on the concept many years later with their 5 star shops.
Bill,
That was the first official LA Co UW Instructor Patch. Note: "Underwater Instructor" when LA Co was established the word SCUBA, although coined in 1943, was not in common use.
It was several years later when Richard Klein dug up the term SCUBA , obtained a copyright and began naming Heathways products utilizing the term SCUBA ...SCUBA Star,.. SCUBA Master etc, SCUBA Pro was established as a division of Heathways in 1962, they produced one catalog and went bankrupt . The assets were purchased by Gus De La Valle and Dick Bonin who continued with the name and developing SCUBA Pro into a very successful company until it was sold to Johnson wax company.
It was the very first UW instructors patch produced in the US for a diving agency and possibly the world.
It is about - no - it is over 50 years old and rare.
I learned on the Fourth edition, and this remains my favorite training book for neophyte scuba divers. I also made sure my kids supplemented their PADI materials with this book, as I think it provides much better explanations of both the physics and physiology of diving for the beginner than the OW and AOW manuals they used in their courses. You can find used examples on bookfinder.com It is an essential for any scuba diver's library.
