Some of you may have used a Garvin hook on the end of your Jon line during ascents, but not every diver knew the man behind the hook. Sadly, Hank Garvin passed away on May 26th following cardiac surgery, and the northeast diving community has lost one of it's most celebrated and loved members.

Hank was a big part of the exciting days of wreck diving in the 1980s and 90s off the coast of New Jersey and Long Island, as well as on the Andrea Doria. I was lucky enough to have spent many wonderful days on the ocean with Hank at the helm of the R/V Garloo, but so many others knew him better. The Long Island Diving Association has posted a beautiful tribute to Hank on their public Facebook page, and you can read it here.

Hank was a kind and gentle man, a great captain, and a humble and tireless supporter of the diving community. Donations in Hank's name may be made through LIDA to the New York Harbor School.

Hank was a mentor and a dear friend, there is a large whole now in the northeast wreck diving community, he will be missed.

My profile pic is from one of the trips out to the 869, We all had a lot of fun crewing for Hank on the R/V Garloo.
