what's the fuzz about DIR and stuff that pertains to it?
please correct me if i'm wrong, but why do i have this impression that the DIR is the fundamentalist version of diving...
i mean saying that because i'm not diving their way, i'm going to die...
so does that mean they're right and i'm wrong?
isn't that just plain arrogance?

please enlighten me...

I would warn about starting with a value judgment before understanding more about it. What DIR *is* and how people *act* are often worlds apart. The system has some very strong points and I would advise you to keep an open mind about the system even if you feel insulted by some of the things people say.

There is lots of information on the internet about DIR. A good place to start is here:

What is this? How to stir up trouble with the fewest words?

Troll!

Troll!

Maybe it isn't a troll, but rather how 90% of divers look at it? I expect it is an honest question. I have 30+ years as a dive, knew Parker Turner and some of the Ginny Springs crew, and never heard about it until I came to SB. Here I find four attitudes on the subject:
1. If you aren't DIR you are wrong
2. Those who are not defensive and honestly try to explan what the concept is
3. Those fed up with being told they are not doing it right
4. The thinking majority that stays out of the frey...

Really...how much exposure do you think someone who lives in the phillipenes has to DIR/GUE/anything other than what he has seen...

IT is a simple question....if he has more, I'm sure there will be some more people along to help him answer those as well....

i'm not stirring up anything here...
but thanks for the article, big T... and thanks for an open mind, diversauras...
i just find it somewhat (pardon for the word) arrogant to tell me that i'm not doing it right while i'm still here able to type and dive again...
i agree with some of the fundamentals of DIR, but somehow, some people behind it tend to become fundamentalists, i mean, the very reason of the word... and now they're right, and i'm wrong...
i believe it's not even the certification agency, but the instructors as well... it's just like two instructors of an agency, one a very good one, while the other sucks...
and i don't know if diversauras is DIR, but if for 30+ years and still diving, if he's not DIR, then is he doing it wrong for over 30 years?

thanks again, big t...
here in the Philippines, though we hear something a thing or two about DIR and GUE, their presence is hardly felt here...
however, i think there's one...
i just don't know where...

There were several links to good infomation (specifically the one mentioned by Big T). I highly suggest you do some research and save your opinion until after you've taken the time to figure things out. Unfortunately, it sounds like you've already made up your mind.

thanks again, big t...

You are more than welcome...I just ask that newbies (myself included) try to keep an open mind to things....it is easy to make an uninformed decision and jump to conclusions...

At first glance, I wasn't real hot on the DIR thing, but after taking a class, talking to some instructors, and reading some things for myself...a lot of it is just common sense. And those who seem to mouth off to everyone don't even know how to spell safety anyway, so just keep doing a little work, and I think you'll be very happy in the end with whatever decision it is you make.
