im going out with gary venet next friday (the 28th) to the dunderburg. its going to be my first time hitting it and im pumped. im diving it with my lp108 (no doubles :( ...) and gonna deco with some 40% so i only have about 15 minutes of bottom time since i dont want to get in to any heavy deco obligation. i know im going to see the figurehead - duh. anyone have any suggestions on where else to go? i talked to a couple people who said if the viz is good, its fun to swim off to the side about 40 feet and you can see a lot of the wreck. id rather get right in there though and see as much as i can. any suggestions? anyone here going then too?

Without doubles and high O2 deco, I wouldn't lose bottom time by going inside. The inside is nice, but I think that you would prefer to see more of the wreck. You can easily see the figurehead and swim along the deck. The sailing paraphenalia like dead-eyes and the like are lovely. If you want to swim off the side to admire the wreck that may work as well. Another thought might be to explore the deck and go up the bowsprit. Then, look at the figurehead just before heading back up the line.

If I went inside, I would feel cheated to dive less than a 20-25 minute profile and miss all of the neat machinery and exquisite scrollwork on the outside of the wreck. :)

This will give you an idea of the profiles I did with the group that went on the wreck when I did.

Brian is correct. I did the Dunderberg two weeks ago. The inside is very cool, as is the propeller and rudder. But with your time limits I'd stay on the deck. Lots to see there. Here is a link to some photos I shot- Dunderberg The crack in the hull on the starboard side is cool. As is all the rigging and mast.

When we were there, July 8, 9, we had 40 feet of viz. It was excellent. Dive one we did 25 minutes bottom time, with a 53 minute run time, and the next day did 30 minutes with a 65 minute run time.

Good luck.

I saw on his website that trips the last two weekends (including this weekend) have been cancelled due to "engine repairs".

When is the boat going to back in action?

I too did the dives with a 121cf single as well as a 108 so don't worry about that. I did the dive on Air and must have been narced out of my mind because I don't remember seeing a propeller on this grand "SAILING VESSEL". I also shot video inside and out but the outside is where I would recommend spending your dive time. If you're anything like me you will end up inside the wreck regardless of what we recommend so I will end this post with; "ENJOY THE DIVE".
