To the tune of, "The Streets Of Laredo"
(With apologies to the incomparable Arlo Guthrie)

There was a crusty ol' maiden named Gertie McLou
And she dived like a dolphin and swam through the blue.
Her BC was ancient and patched up with duct tape
Her regs dark and tarnished and spotted with glue.

Her skin was like leather and tougher than rawhide
She'd cuss out new divers and make them all cry.
Her logbook was ragged and blackened with mildew
But she was the darling of our dive boat "Red Tide."

She swore and she growled and she guzzled her brew
She outdrank the captain, the deckhands, and crew
She stared down great whites and rode on their backs
She was the darling of "Red Tide," that Gertie McLou.

One blustery day the wind howled and blew
The waves crashed like thunder and sickened the crew
Gertie strapped on her BC and dived off of the platform
While the rest of us fell down and heaved gagged and spewed

We watched and we waited while the fuel did burn
We barfed off the rear and we peed off the stern
The gray waves they tossed us all over the sea
While we waited for hours for Gertie's return

Off in the distance we heard a cry of, "YAHOO!"
And saw Gertie astride the back of a Blue.
She'd lassoed that whale with the loop of her crotchstrap
And that's the last that we saw of ol' Gertie McLou.

Yes, that was the end of our darling, that Gertie McLou....
