Definitely sad. But Kansas is far from crime free. 24 folks have died in Kansas City so far this year.

Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri are adjacent to each other, straddling the border between the two states. The two cities are described as the greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area.
To make things even more confusing they are located at the confluence of the Kansas River and the Missouri River.
