That was so funny it nearly killed me...

I was at Margarita Island, Venuzueala back in March, 2002 getting my Open water card. I'd done about 26 dives via resort courses over the 7 previous years.

A young couple from the states were down there as well and decided to take the resort course together. All of us 6 certified divers, the couple, driver and the DM were in a pickup truck on the way to the dive boat.

We were all chatting about how safe diving is. I came out with the comment that the couple in the resort course were more likely to die on the way to the boat than anything happening while they were diving..

Well to make a long story short. We got front-ended by a drunk driver about 100 yards from the dock. Fortunately we were only doing about 5 miles an hour..

Once we found out everyone was ok, we started laughing...

One of those I told you so moments.. too bad I didn't have a camera with me. Oh, and everyone had a fantastic dive.

Cheers,

My mom, son, husband and I were snorkeling off Moorea with a group for a 'stingray encounter'. My husband isn't a confident swimmer and would never want to dive. All of the sudden we all hear some guy SCREAM, "Oh sh*t!". I recognized the voice as belonging to the love of my life. Everyone pops their heads out of the water to see what was happening. While he was snorkeling he felt something soft fluttering against his leg. Thinking it was my hand, he grabbed hold. (We often hold hands in the water. It makes him comfortable while it makes me sure that he stays close and is okay) He looks back to see he has got a grip on a big stingray. He let go and screamed! We haven't let him forget it and we all still laugh.

One time I brought just one fin with me to go get in the water, but then I realized I forgot the other one so I had to walk back to the picnic table, which was about 20 feet away...boy was that funny...you had to be there....that was the funniest moment of my life.

It took us about 15 minutes to get her calmed down enough to dive and WE had to get in first. I still don't know how she swarmed aboard in full gear. I was never able to do that in several attempts on subsequent trips.

One word;

MOTIVATION!

Diving with Charlie at Buddy's is quite the thrill!!!

Coming back from a solo night dive in the river, it's about a 150 yard hump down a brush-lined trail, and a rabbit jumped out in front of me and scared the crud out of me. I had to laugh. Here I am thinking nothing of making a solo night dive in a river and I get freaked out by a bunny rabbit!

I have heard many stories about Charlie and how he would come up and steal any fish that some divers had speared.

Back on the dock, I found out that “Charlie” is a local tarpon that comes out to greet
night divers with regularity, because we “light up” his meal for him.

Cleaning my wet suit was no trouble at all, really.
You know, Andy, oddly enough, Charlie and I have made acquaintance in the very same manner. The DM was kind enough to give us a briefing about him, but it still made made my adrenals react when he swam from the murky depths to hunt in my light. That is one big fish.

I hope to find out first-hand in about 8 weeks (not that I'm counting, mind you). Tarpon are such beautiful fish ...
