We would like to share a little bit about SCUBA Diving in Hilo and explain some of the differences from diving on the West side of the Big Island of Hawaii. On the east side, Hilo, there are cold ponds from the rain runoff and the water seeping through the lava tubes. Therefore, it is a little bit colder near the coast which leads to healthier coral life. We are proud of our coral and multitudes of sea life. Hilo Scuba Diving provides tours and PADI courses for all levels of diver. We want to share the beauty of Hilo. Entry in most areas are rocky, so we suggest a tabi type bootie (felt bottom). They cut way down on slippage when going over the slippery rocks. Once in, you will feel the cold runoff right away. Not to worry though, once you get about 15' off shore the water warms right up. It is usually around 75 degrees. We suggest a 3 mil wetsuit for your dive. gloves are cool, but not necessary. We hope this gives people a little background for SCUBA diving in Hilo.
