My girlfriend(inexperienced diver) and I(experienced diver) are considering a trip somewhere....

She does want to spend at least "sometime" on land(why I don't know!!!).

We havent been to any of these places: Belize, Honduras or Thailand. I would go with the one that is least expensive right now.

What would you recommend and where should I book it through?

Thanks
Mike

I'd go to Honduras or Belize after hurricane seasons myself.

well, December is after official hurricane season, and your odds in November are pretty safe.

Have been to Thailand and Honduras several times going to Belize in Dec. Both Thailand and Honduras are great but I would go with Thailand if you are looking for a little more exotic diving and dryland. If you lean to Honduras include Utila in your plans. If possible I would recommend a live-aboard to the Similan Islands out of Phuket. There are a lot of options for dryland depending on budget and time. For diving in Phuket check out these guys:

Thailand would be my pick. Travel to get here from MN will cost a bit more than the other 2, but, once you're here the costs will be dramatically cheaper. Even the diving is about 75% of what it would be elsewhere.

Dry land activities include shop til you drop, great food. Check out the road side stands, best Thai food around. For a good old steak you can't beat Coffee Pots in Kata on Phuket Island. It's even better than most back in the states.

I've been doing my diving through Phuket Scuba-Club, aka Ringo here on the board.

If price is a limiting factor, then Belize is fairly cheap. The town of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye is right on the barrier reef, and most dive operators have day trips to the outlying atolls. That's just one of the country's dive destinations, though.

There is also quite a bit to do on land: I've never been to the southern part of the country, but the north and northwest have Mayan ruins, caves, canoeing, nature reserves, etc. However, "shop till you drop" is not a concept I'd associate with Belize... not that there's anything wrong with that... :D

Good advice, overall. I loved the Similians, but I warn you: You will be SPOILED!!! The diving and natural beauty of the islands can't be described. I also loved Utila, but there isn't much to do on land. If you choose Utila, make time for Pico Bonito - a fabulous rain forest park with excellent white water rafting. You can get there from La Ceiba - the same city where you catch the ferry to Utila. The lodge in the park is expensive, but you can stay in La Ceiba and still go on a tour.

I think, if budget is the primary consideration, Utila will be cheapest (mainly considering the cost of transportation between diving and land attractions - its dirt cheap), but Thailand is also fantastic for sightseeing, especially in the north, like Chiang Mai (which requires a flight).

Happy travels, and remember: Choosing between Honduras and Thailand is just like asking, "Which kind of chocolate do you like best?"

I've been to all three and as far as I'm concerned Thailand blows the other two out of the water. If you need help...there is a link to my travel agent, World of diving, in my sig line. Ext 204 is Chris Fox, he will be glad to help you.
