My wife and I have been wanting to start scuba lessons. We don't know a thing about it. I used to do alot of snorkeling back in high school, but I'm sure theres a big difference. Anyways, I was hopeing someone could tell me of a good class around here, I'm in Abilene. I saw a website with classes at possom kingdom. Has anyone been there? Any info would greatly be apreciated. thanks, Jake

I'm from North Texas, but you are welcome to post on the Texas Swamp Divers subforum. I'm sure you will get some replys there.

The Texas sub forum here is a great bunch of members, but seems to be more focused on the parts of Texas that has local diving. You might also post in Rocky Mountain sub forum.

Surely there are good shops there in historic Abilene, and you are closer to PK that I am I guess - only 100+ miles, but your local shops may prefer San Solomon Springs just south of Pecos near Balmorhea - clear, spring fed, natural bottom pool, 20 ft deep, hot showers at the pool, non-smoking cabins at the park, other rooms in town - even tho it's almost 300 miles from there.

Here's an SSI shop. Give them a call:

Name Underwater Connection
Category Platinum Facility
Address 2950 North 1st

City Abilene
State TX
Country USA
Postal Code 79603
Phone 325-677-2822
Fax fax 325-677-1563

PK (in my opinion) is typical Texas lake diving. Low vis most of the time. Significant thermalcline and not a whole lot to see. It's better experienced in a boat.

It's still better than nothing.

You'll love or hate diving because of the people you are around. Several Texans have named shops local to you. . . you should visit all of them! Posum Kingdom is a great lake, us Okies regularly took diving trophies home with us. There are areas of the lake with great visibility, if there are no new divers in front of us. Areas with poor visibilty, right behind the fins of a new diver.

Most agencies now teach diving in a short block that you can accomplish in a weekend or two. That can be taken in a muddy farm pond or 100 foot visibilty in Cozumel Mexico ( you Texans are trying to take over down there). If a local shop has people you like to spend time with. . . join them for your diving education. If you feel you are just a money pit to them. . . Leave, and go to a friendlier place. I like the people at PK, I like many of the people in Cozumel, I like many of the people in dive shops in Oklahoma. . . You'll learn, the more divers you know, the more you will enjoy diving. :blinking:
