Just got a new dive computer, but trip is not until after the return period. Is there a way to test the computer without taking it for an actual dive? Would like to avoid finding out the depth gauge doesn't work or something like that while on vacation.

Thanks

Go to the LDS you bought it from and see if they have a pressure pot to test it (in water). If something is wrong with it due to a failure, it should be covered by warranty.

Go diving?

and if they do not... (none of mine do)

then you can take a rope and a weight and go to the most convenient body of water close to you and tie the weight and dive computer to the end of the rope and toss them off of the end of the dock (remember to hold the other end of the rope). a 20 feet for 10 minutes test should allow you to verify that the computer tracks both depth and time.

We had a university near us with a chamber for the marine biology department, it was standard to pop round there with a new PDC and ask the guys to drop it down to 100' for a couple of minutes (make sure its in a bucket of water, they do NOT like dry pressurization at ALL!)

We also did a chamber dive as part of the NAUI Master Diver course, used to video the guys getting narced then play back afterwards. Dive was to 50m, gave everyone a chance to see in real time what their PDC would do with deco obligations, what the alarms were etc etc

Return it and buy another one closer to your trip?

That said, does it really matter? If you dive it and it doesn't work, the place where you bought it probably won't accept a return anyway. At that point, from their perspective, it's used, so they would want you to go through the warranty repair process.
