I would think that Garmin might make some additional sensors that could work with it...maybe a HR chest strap/O2 metering or something...or maybe its just better range and a more consistent reading.The only thing I can think of is the extra distance underwater so you can monitor the tanks of other divers. It seems to be a very limited use case and relies on the other diver(s) also having the Garmin D1 transmitter (which makes it even more limited).
Who knows but new tech and competition for better methods should be a good thing. If it has been 25 years, that's a damn long time for tech.
