That video was taken in Beqa Lagoon, Fiji.
They have been conducting shark feeds there for roughly 10 years.
The first thing that is necessary to understand, is that many Fijians, especially people from Beqa island, still practice ancient customs and traditions. One that you may have heard of is fire-walking. Manasa and Rusi, the divers feeding the sharks in the video are both from Beqa and Manasa is a former fire-walker.
Also, they believe in the ancient sea God, Dakuwaqa. It is believed that Dakauwaqa
(pronounced: Doc-oo-wong-ga) will protect the people of Tavunuei and Beqa passage. This is what gives them the courage to interact with the sharks this way.
It took close to a year before any Bull sharks would come in close enough to divers to hand-feed. Eventually other sharks began to show, silvertips, lemons, blacktips, whitetips, nurse, grey reef sharks and also Tigers.
The idea of the shark feed was born out of monetary gain (what business isn't) by a non-Fijian, but you now see why he chose Fijians =Dakuwaqa, but the idea was to teach the villages that own the customary fishing rights to shark reef marine reserve that conservation was needed to insure fishing for future generations. Therefore every diver who dives there donates money to the villages so they don't fish out their area. In addition to the sharks, the fish life is simply amazing.
The area where the shark feeds are conducted were already in poor shape, so yes you do see quite a few people moving all over the sea floor.
Most of you will know that Fiji is a very popular dive destination. Most divers going there may not even know about the sharks feeds, and almost no one sees any of the Tiger sharks or Bull sharks on dives that are not conducted near the feeding sites.
Beqa Adventure Divers sites are 100 feet and 65 feet deep. Aqua Treks sites are 85 feet and 50 feet deep. Other than the shark feeds, the sharks are hardly ever seen.
Ask anyone who has dove Beqa lagoon (not at the shark feed sites) and ask them what kind of sharks they have seen. Most will answer whitetips, Blacktips, and grey reef sharks.
The thing that people need to realize is that sharks are not as stupid as most think. The Tiger in the video we are talking about has been interacting with Manasa and Rusi for a very long time. Once you dive there you understand that the Tigers are VERY inqusitive and like to look at you VERY closely, the Bulls hardly give you the time of day.
These guys know what they are doing, hopefully Dakuwaqa will continue protecting the dive master, firewalking, shark feeders of Beqa Lagoon...
Give it a try, a TON of people have, and it is quite the rush...
