Constructive criticism is welcome.
Try keeping track in your head of depth/time as a running profile during your next dive.

[*] Neither.
If that option was available, of course :)
Blargh... *neither* is usually an option when there are two other choices. *None of the above* is often used as an alternative when there are more than two other choices. Since this poll had 4 choices plus the catch all *What is profiling* (which incidently has caught nothing) I omitted your choice of *Neither*.

I apologize for the oversight...
Would you like me to ask a moderator to add it for you?:D

btw... just how long have you been using that computer?

I am ususally paying too much attention to the divers in my charge to allow me the "fun" of profiling the way you described. Heck, I think I know their SPG readings better than my own!

If/when I do confined diving, I will probably pay more attention to that sort of detail. For now, my focus is elsewhere and I expect my Cobra to do the job that I have assigned it. So far she's been good to me.
Good Pete... I am glad *she* is watching out for you... while you watch out for the divers in your charge....

btw... do you ever just go out and do dives to improve your own skills? Perphaps on one of these you and your buddy could attempt keeping track of the developing profile (as I use the term) in your head... just for fun of course.

Pug,

You did a great job setting up this thread and poll. You responses to everyone comments really provided a valuable insight. Wish we had more threads like this.

Do it again! Do it again !

huh ? wazat then ? :mean:

Seriously though, your "whats profiling" option is not applicable to me since it (very sneakily imnsho) implies that one is using a computer.

I don't use a computer. I don't profile. I don't do multilevel dives. Where does that leave me ?

I'm pretty new to diving, so I can still remember how to use tables from my OW Class. However, I bought a computer so I could have increased BT at a variety of depths in each dive.

Thanks again, UP, for bringing up this interesting discussion.

Happy Diving,
Scuba-sass :)
You are welcome Scuba-sass... though not everyone is so happy to have this brought up and be challenged to think

As an experiment... and without trying to adjust your NDLs (let your trusty computer do that) just try keeping a running mental profile of the unfolding dive in your mind... each time you look at the computers bar graph... go ahead and mentally note your time and depth and actually think about it.

The way I use the term has nothing to do with pre-planning a profile... it is a running awarness of the time/depth profile of the actual dive as it unfolds.

What can it hurt to be a little bit more aware, eh?

Neither I suppose:wink:

However some would say in grave danger...
Others might figger that you have something else up your sleeve.

I use a computer but I DO keep a mental tab in my head of what I am reading on the computer, I don't just glance at it and forget what I just saw if that's what you mean by "rotting your brain". I monitor my computer more often than every 5 minutes, I would say more like every couple minutes and each time I look at it I keep in mind what readings I had the last time I checked. Same goes with my analog pressure gauge. By the time I'm done with my dive I have a pretty accurate picture of what my dive looks like in my head. I am a pretty new diver but I can honestly say I haven't been surprised at any of the data of my dives when I view it in Dive Manager.

Hmmm.. I wonder  Lemme think about it.

Well, I tried, but the damn wrist seal is too tight

Actually, nothing mysterious. I would call it "standard dive planning by the book" but I wouldn't want to sound patronising, now do I?

This is how it works:

1) Agree dive plan with buddy.
2) Dive it.

Simple ? You bet... Will it work always? Yes.. Why? Because we dont do ad hoc dives. Full stop.

Surprised ? :)
