Hello everyone. I just read a thread posted by a 13 year old and was impressed by her comments. I know that this board prides it's self as being family friendly. With the increase in teenage divers, what to do?(we have a 14yr old ourselves) and I do not let her roam the internet alone (SB included).

My question is this, should we have a forum for teen age viewers? or should there be an age requirement? (like over 18 or something) There are some discussions here that are intended for the adult viewer.

The young lady made a reply to another SB viewer that in my opinion had she been an adult would have gotten a response inteded for one.

As a parent I would not want any one advicing my child without my knowledge. Where do we go from here?

We do have an age limit here and it is, coincidently, 13. We also use that as a goal when moderating, i.e. PG13 is the limit. If you see things here that you think go beyond that limit, you should use the report feature.

I think it would be nice to have a teenage forum. I too have a son that dives, 17 y/o.

Perhaps under their screen name, there can be a note that reflects that the person posting is under 18 y/o.

When someone submits a post, no matter their age, they are responsible for the content of their post. As I have noticed on this board, when someone posts something inappropriate it is quickly handled. :bash:

I started posting here as a teenager but I was an adult (18) and I never had a problem with any of the content. This site is very family friendly (and I am not easily offended.) I think that the moderators do a great job of keeping things clean but not boring. I would have no problem sending any of my younger students or family members here.

This is a great idea, NetDoc, you could get all the scubaducks to join up ;)

One of the main purposes of this board, in my very humble opinion (does'nt know weather salt is heavier than fresh, or vi-ser-versa) :11: Is to make Scuba knowledge avalible to everyone.............. FREE ;)

This has to be a good thing ;)

Yeah there is a good way to drive people away. Single them out and I garuntee you that if people read a post by someone who is in the under 18 catagory they will automatically discount any advice they might give or pull a "oh how cute" type thing. I know two divers that are 15 and 16 respectively who know more and who are willing to learn more about diving than some people who have been at it for 20 years.

Thank you for clearing that up, I'm familiar with that feature!

However, my intent is not so much to report anyone. The intent is to bring this issue forth and obtain SB viewers opininon.

I'm fully supportive of good parenting, but I think you're fooling yourself if you don't think your 14 year old is getting advice you're unaware of. The best I think you can hope for is to be open with her, and try to mitigate rather than shelter.

Single them out.........not my plan.....we already have listed under our screen names some of the following: new member, regular member, instructor, moderator, senior moderator.......it is just a title. My thinking is that if I knew a post was coming from someone under the age of 18, I would be more willing to excuse the spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and possibly the tone of the post itself.

If someone chooses not to take the advice given on this board then that is their choice. If it is good advice, it shouldn't matter the age, gender, or background of the poster. If it does that only that person looses.
