That changes everything. You are totally allowed to smoke, but only as long as you are a hardcore techie diver from Eastern Europe, French CMAS diver or old-school Dutch. That’s about it . Or a recreational (but not tech!!) instructor on Malta or in Greece.

There is a strong contingent of GUE backmount tech divers on Vancouver Island. I took Fundies (and CCR-F) from Jason Cook, and did T1 with Guy Shockey. I would highly recommend both, and I know a lot of divers with similar experience who took Fundies with Jason and had a great experience. I haven't taken any tech classes outside of GUE, but the quality of training is absolutely night and day compared with the PADI recreational courses (OW/AOW/Rescue) that I took. One other benefit of GUE training around Vancouver/Vancouver Island is that we have a very active local community, with a lot of people doing recreational and tech/project diving on a weekly basis.

The smoking, however, would be a barrier to entry - part of the GUE paperwork is a waiver that you're not currently a smoker.

I know of a few divers who quit smoking to start GUE training. It's good to have some motivation for change...

Come to Switzerland then. It's like the 90s here in terms of people smoking. Also cigarettes are dirt cheap compared to income.
