Hello everybody--
I am going on vacation in a few days and i was just wondering how/if everybody attaches their larger cameras to themselves. With my old (sony) p&s i just used this teather and it gave me some security and if i wasnt using it i could have my hands free. However i get the idea that with a larger camera (G10 in the ike housing with a sealife strobe) just letting it go will not be quite as good an option. Do you guys have a teather on your setup or do you just hold it? thanks

I use the same type on my Canon 5D and it's pretty big. Once you're in the water your camera should be within a pound or two of neutral, so it doesn't take much to keep it near you.

I use this Trident Lanyard for my G10 Ikelite housing. It is very similar to yours but with a brass clip, which might be more durable with the heavy load of the housing when compared to the plastic clip. "I do tons of hikes to my shore dives, so having something like this makes sense, if you do mostly boat dives I'm sure the plastic clip will hold up"

I have several of those types, don't like them because they tend to be easy to get tangled.

Last few years have used the locking retractors, like one of these:

By the way I have a G10, with two YS110 strobes.

Lock it when you don't want it going anywhere... release to take pictures...

Replace about ever 150 -200 dives

The retractor works well as mentioned above. Personally I use and recommend the Cetacea lanyard (similar to above from Trident, doesnt matter). However there is a different version that you want to get. Instead of the plastic carabiner or the bolt snap, you want the one with the stainless carabiner. It is very easy to snap onto the BCD D Ring when the divemaster hands you down your camera. The bolt snap requires more dexterity and attention to make sure its connected, and salt water tends to really wear on the bolt snaps Ive found.

Excellent point H20...

I am actually using one that looks like this:

I have a different name on mine, but it looks the same. The Stainless carabiner works really well. And I see this one is made by the same company you refer to (or at least branded the same). The pictured one is a "high force", I don't actually like that, because it pulls back too strong.

I use the same with my g7 in canon case with z240 but I double zipped tied a stainless steel bolt. I can hear it make contact with my d-ring when I'm trying to snap it. I wouldn't trust the plastic as my rig is too heavy.

awesome tips guys! im definitely gunna cut off that cheap plastic clip and head for the stainless caribeaner. as far as attaching it to the housing... where would you suggest? I have the ike housing so maybe over on the left side of the tray (looking at back of camera)?? would drilling a small hole for attachment be recommended?

I use a Lanyard very similar to FrankPro1, in fact it maybe the same lanyard. I dive with a D200, and Ike strobes. That is a full sized DSLR, so larger than the G10, but a bit.

Retractors are very handy, until they stop retracting! Then they become less of a help, and more of a problem. I just don't trust them.

Flip over the housing and look underneath. Where the housing attaches to the tray there are a couple slits which you can loop the lanyard through.
