Hello,

Does anyone know if TDI requires doubles for its deco proc class? The gear requirements list for the course reads like a single cylinder is suitable.

Note: I'm asking if doubles are a requirement, not if they are recommended.

thanks,

brrrr......

Singles with a h or y-valve is acceptable, but dbls are highly recommended.

TDI standards are the minimum standards. It would be up the instructor to require doubles or allow the use of a single tank. I personally require doubles.

I really dont think you're getting the best out of the course unless you have a twinset.

With a single (i) you have very limited gas which affects the dives (both bottom time and the back gas/lost deco gas bailout options and (ii) you have to be VERY swift with shutdowns or you will quickly lose all your gas.

Single and deco you probably wont be down there long enough to run up more than a few mins which to me defeats the point.

If someone has a single tank, I suspect the deco will be "simulated" as there really is not much margin to do actual deco at 150 ft unless it is a really large single.

Besides, if you are planning on doing the kind of diving where Advanced Nitrox and Deco Procedures are required, you are going to want to have and dive a set of doubles anyway.

Ideally, get comfortable in the water with doubles and get the configuration wrinkles worked out before you take a deco procedures class. It makes no sense to be task loaded with an unfamiliar configuration and then try to learn something totally new in a class where you only have 4 or 5 dives to get up to speed.

I've heard of instructors teaching students in singles, but I strongly dissaprove. Keep in mind that TDI standards state that you need 100 minutes of bottom time for advanced nitrox and 100 more for deco procedures. That does not include decompression time. You will have to do alot of bounce dives in singles. You need doubles for these courses unless you have independent singles plus deco stages.

Got a couple of friends that just did AdvX and Deco with single tanks. No H's or Y's. I think they used pony's for redundant air and 80's with 40% for simulated deco. Expensive and cold for sure. Max depth 80-90 ffw. Six foot vis. Instructor through in a Nitrox card for the cert fee. Priceless,,,,,,,,,,,, Now they are tech divers ,,,,,,,,,,got the cards to prove it. I can get the instructors name for you if that's the way you want to go.

As a guy who is just starting to think about Tech, this horrifies me! Got the cards? Big deal! If I decide to take the plunge, I won't much care about the piece of plastic handed to me at the end. I will want the necessary knowledge and experience! If I want fancy looking plastic cards, I will talk to Office Depot...
