My best friend, dive buddy and soon-to-be wife (all the same person) will be honeymooning in Fiji (August 16 - 24) and staying at Taveuni Island Resort. Since Swiss Fiji divers seems to have a lock on the resort dive activities I was hoping I could get some feedback on the resort and dive operations.

We are both looking forward to the trip and I keep buying more U/W camera gear to immortalize the trip.

Any info, good or bad is appreciated.

Randy

Hola Randy

I already booked 1 week
9 sept-9-16 with Taveuni Island Resort/Swiss Fiji Divers . Besides their web site and some info from Lonely Planet Fiji`s book ( is a good idea to have it for your trip ) i didn't find any other information .
I spent big time searching the web !!! without results

Maybe their answer to my questions can provide you with some help, so find my e-mail exhange with Swiss divers, as follows:

Hello:

I'm planning to spend 1 week at Taveuni Is. resort on oct.9-16/2004. I'll go to Taveuni mainly to make u/w photography so pls. let me know the following:

1) What is your daily dive schedule - departure time , average time to go to most dive sites , surface interval between dives (how long and where is done) , is lunch provided , arrival time .

2) How far are your facilities and dock from the Taveuni Island Resort , it's within walking distance or you arrange transportation? I use heavy/bulky camera equipment so i don't want to work hard during my vacations carrying it to and from my room.

3) Do you have available fresh water tanks in your boats for the cameras , and dry space for changing film , batteries. etc ?

4) I want dive 4 or 5 days , how much is your rate in US$ . If i buy a 5 days package and dove only 4 , do you reimburse the not consumed dives ? . Also is possible that my girlfriend use some dives from my package?

5) Do you have nitrox fills available and how much do you charge.

6) Do you provide special assistant to u/w photographers ? ( i.e. guided help to look for specific photosubjects , assistance carrying a 2nd camera rig u/w ,etc.) if this have an additional cost , let me know.

7) What visibility and water temp is the norm for mid october.

8) Tell me more info. about the site for night dives that you use .

9) It's E-6 process available there and how much per roll .

10) Are any damage on the reefs at your area after all El nIño , global warming , hurricanes, rivers' runoff , crown of thorns starfish , etc, etc. . Pls. be honest , i need to know what to expect.

Thanks in advance for your help

Jose Alejandro

Bula,
Thanks very much for your message, have you already had a look into our website www.swissfijidivers.com, where you find a lot of information about our dive operation.

Our dive itinerary looks as follows: you have to be at the shop (just next door to Taveuni Island Resort) at 08.15, your dive equipment is already on board, the boat leaves 08.30 or earlier, trip to the Rainbow Reef takes between 25 and 40 minutes (depending dive site, boat, sea condition), first dive, then surface intervall of 1 hour close to a beach, we serve tea, coffee, juice, water, cookies, crackers and fruits, we also provide towels, second dive on a different dive site, and the boat is back between 1.00 and 2.00pm, just right for lunch. You leave your dive gear, except your camera stuff (this is usually the guest's responsibility), on board, our boys bring everything back, wash it and hang it up, ready for the next day.
All our dives are guided, 1 guide for up to 3 divers.
On the big boat there is a cabin for dry stuff, on both boats there are freshwater showers which we usually use to rinse cameras on the boat, back on shore you may use our freshwater tubs.
The 4-days dive package (2 morning dives per day) is F$ 560.00 (US$ 330.00), the 5 days is F$ 675.00 (US$ 400.00). We recommend that you only pre-book the 4 days package (we do not refund not-used dive days), if you want to add one more day, we shall the additional day on the 5-days package. Packages are personal and dives may not be transferred to other divers.
We offer Nitrox fillings, additional charge per tank is F$ 17.00 (US$ 10.00).
If you like to have your own guide and assistance the additional costs would be F$ 85.00 (US$ 50.00) for the 2 dives.
Water temperature in October is approx. 26/28 degrees Celsius, visibility between 20 to 40 m.
For night dives we usually use one dive site close-by, on a small reef.
We do not offer E6, however there is the possibility to use this service at Garden Island Resort (30 minutes drive), they charge F$ 30.00 per roll.
We can tell you that the Rainbow Reef is still in good condition, there are a few damages mainly from cyclones, but not from El Nino or crown of thorns.

If you have any more questions, please let us know. Looking forward to your final decision.
Best regards,

TAVEUNI'S FINEST DIVING

I've been to Taveuni twice... both times I stayed in multiple places (campground, Toka Toka, Coconut Grove). There are 3 dive ops there, but they all tend to hover around the same sites.

If you can talk them into it... there is a submerged reef off the NE corner of the island that never breaks the surface and aside from fishing tackle and some current it is awesome. Another place that you won't be likely to get to is a small set of uninhabited islands (aside from the 2 goats) ~ 1 hour's sail east... we didn't dive this site, only snorkeled, but it was the best, untouched site I saw in all of Fiji. (Sorry, don't recall the island name offhand).

Its an awesome place! Now I'm wistfully wanting to get back there....

Gracias Jose,

The info from the email is actually very helpful. WHne I get back, I'll give you a trip report on the Resort and dive sites.
This will be my first trip with my new, and first real, underwater rig (oly 5050z, pt-015. and hopefully an Inon d-180) so hopefully I will have some shots to share also.

Buenos Tardes,

Randy

We were there in June.

Bad news was that it rained for 6 out of 9 days. Torrential wind driven rain. Sorry but Taveuni is no place for a honeymoon as there is only diving to do, unless you're totally into diving. People in Fiji either very friendly or sullen. 85% very friendly.

Dive guides with Swiss Fiji were top notch and very friendly. Always a hearty laugh. Only highest praise for them. Smaller dive boat was not good as it gassed us with exhaust out to the dive sites. Sit all the way in the back on this boat or you'll be sick before you dive. Appeared geared toward Europeans, what a surprise, but were amicable besides that. We had attitude problem but otherwise, a decent operation.

Remember many sites in Somosomo straits are current dives. Getting in the water can be like waterskiing behind the dive boat.

Oh yes! Fully agreed, but that isn't an easy quality to come by in the fairer sex.

My wife went from lover of the water uninterested in scuba to lover of warm water diving. And us in Northern CA. My dive commute is now hellacious. :11:
Scubaroo:
Actually diving honeymoons are great (if you're both avid divers!) :)

Actually I didn't emphasize how great the Fiji people are.

They were fantastic. BULA! (hello) is what you always hear. Everybody waves. Big smile. How great it was after the "don't talk to me" attitude of Silicon Valley. But now nobody knows what I'm saying when I greet them.

Sega Ni Lega (no worries)

Man, I've got to go back....tomorrow...

Shasta-man,

Bula (Practicing already). THanks for the info. We are counting the days - 18 to wedding - 20 to Fiji (21 if you count losing a day).

Luckily for me, the fiance is why I'm into diving. Always wanted to but hadn't taken the time until she said she had always wanted to get certified also. So off we went - now 1 year and several thousand dollars poorer we continue to talk about the 'next' dive trip. Side note - I actually proposed underwater in Cozumel, :07: only time I ever came back with more air.

Thanks again for the info. When I get back I'll post a full report along with the pics (more money for UW gear).
