Diver dies in South Taranaki
A diver has died at a South Taranaki beach.

Initial indications are that the man was shore diving at the beach near Puketapu Road, Pihama, with another man at the time he got into trouble around 4pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services received a report at 4:25pm that a diver was unconscious on the shoreline, a police statement said.

Damn :( Legally we can't have any scuba equipment anywhere near a paua (abalone) catch - even in the car we drive them home in - so if he was after them he would/should have been free diving. Scuba is okay for hunting the "crayfish" mentioned in the article - I'd love to know why we're all brought up calling our lobsters 'crayfish' in NZ.

Either way this sucks. RIP :(

He may have been free diving. The article is unclear about that.
