Whats wrong with carrying an AL80 over your shoulder with a hand on the valve?

There's probably nothing wrong doing that. I like to take 2 tanks from/to the boat and the garage and from/to the vehicle and the dive shop. Having a good solid handle on the tank makes it nicer for me, and I think my husband likes it too now that he's used it for a while.

I wouldn't stop paying the electric bill in order to have handles but they are nice to have.

What's wrong with the built in valve?:D
I don’t get it either, there’s a good of a handle as you’d wish already( the valve) and manufacturers come up with these “ingenious” ideas, and then people buy them
