alright, if you read my post in the newbie forum, then you know this already, but incase you didnt, i am recapping.

I currently live in Petawawa Ontario. which is basically a pimple on the mad. a nothing town with nothing to do.. and i hate it here.. i am sure i will love it here in the summer, but today it was -24 with windchill and that is so far from ok.

in september i will be moving to costa rica. while there i hope to learn scuba diving, to the extent of becomging an instructor. i am very determined, and iwont stop till i succeed.

and i am happy to announce that i am starting my training a little earlier than i thought i would be, more specifically, february 20. i will be taking the open water diving course at teh military base here in town..

this is awesome, since i can then rent equipment/buy it, and dive in the lake/river thing we haev here this summer and get some dives under my belt..

i am super stoked.. i just have to go out and buy the gear i need, mask, fins, boots, and something else.. i dont remember right now.. STOKED!! i am stoked.

i am pretty stoked about it!

Good luck. And have fun. Thats what its all about. Pimples on the maps do have some of the best dives sites! BUT not in that weather.

Hello V4nity,

Still lookin' good. I'm glad you started your OW class. I started mine too last weekend. What a great time, starting a new adventure. Good luck! I know your gonna love Coasta Rica, just don't drive there. They are the worst drivers on the planet ha ha. They love to give Americans tickets hopefully they will know you Canadian. Keep us posted, especially after you get to CR.

When you purchase personal gear, you want to make sure it fits, and you like it. The other item is a snorkel. There are a TON of posts about personal preference on this equipment.

One of the most important things is the mask fit. If it leaks much while diving it's a pain. I'd also recommend trying some BigEye type masks as the increased vision is nice. I dive the Mares XVision, and It's the best mask I've dove to date. I may however not be best for you if it does not fit well even if this is a very popular choice. I like black skirts, although clear skirts would have some appeal on some woman, but not in the water :D

Fins need to fit the bootie you purchase. If you want a hard sole bootie, make sure the fins you buy fit as they may require upping the size a bit. Fin choice is also difficult, but there are basically two camps Splits, and non-Splits. I use Apollo BioFins.

Snorkel. IMO get the least expensive one possible unless you plan on doing a lot of snorkeling. The dry models are popular, but I often don't even carry a snorkel. Long surface swims, choppy sea, and drift dives are the exception.

Get your materials in advance, and study the heck out of them. As you want to be an instructor, passing is really not good enough. You need to know them inside out because you will have to be in a position to teach these things in the future.

Good Luck in Class.

Did I just say that twice? Wow that was like Deja bu all over again

The "something else" is probably a snorkel.

Jump in and go for it. Make all of the dives you can where you are before heading to Coasta Rica. With the goal of becoming an instructor the one thing many students prefer is a diver has really done some diving under assorted conditions. Those Canadian dives will be a good toehold.

Make sure you really understand gear befor buying. Always try buy gear you have been able to test. It is almost always best not to buy beyond your mentioned personal items until after you are certified.

Have fun,
Pete
