One person drowns, two hospitalized in incidents at Kenting beaches | Society | FOCUS TAIWAN - CNA ENGLISH NEWS
Taipei, Sept. 1 (CNA) A scuba diver drowned at beach in Kenting on Thursday, while two other people were hospitalized after they almost drowned at a different beach in the popular tourist destination in southern Taiwan, according to a firefighter.

The scuba diver, a 23-year-old tourist, got into difficulty in the Houbihu marina around 1 p.m. Thursday and was pulled from the water sometime after by rescue workers but was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital, the firefighter said.

In a separate incident around noon, the 9-year-old daughter of a Chinese couple was engulfed by a wave while she was playing on the beach in front of the Howard resort in Kenting, the emergency worker said.

The child's mother, a 29-year-old woman surnamed Liao, ran into the water to try to rescue her daughter but she too got into trouble, the firefighter said.

He said Liao's husband also jumped in and managed to pull his wife and child from the water.

When rescue workers arrived on the scene, they performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on Liao and her daughter and rushed them to hospital, the firefighter said. After emergency treatment, the child regained consciousness but Liao was still in critical condition, the rescue worker said.

First place I ever went snorkeling was in Kenting, really got me interested in being in the water and eventually diving (even though there wasn't much to see there). As usual, not many details I guess we'll have to wait and see if anything else pops up on this one.
