Ok, so google gave me a bad article. He was a swimmer, not a scuba diver.

Westpac rescue chopper flies to Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park

A scuba diver is in hospital in a critical condition after being pulled from the water at a remote beach.

A scuba diver is in hospital in a critical condition after being pulled from the water at a remote beach.
Bystanders at Flint and Steel Beach at Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park north of Sydney performed CPR on the man and dialled triple-zero, triggering an extensive and complex emergency response across Saturday afternoon.

NSW Ambulance crews, the Westpac rescue helicopter, Rural Fire and Fire and Rescue and NSW Police crews raced to the scene just after 2pm, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman told NewsWire.

The man, aged in his 40s, was put onto a Rural Fire Service boat and transported to a port, where an ambulance crew then took him by road to Northern Beaches Hospital in a critical condition.

He arrived at the hospital just before 5pm, the spokeswoman said.

A NSWFR spokesman told NewsWire six firefighters assisted, including a specialist rescue team

Very much doubt it is a scuba diving accident as no one would dive there. Sounds like a swimming accident.

Report in today's Sydney Morning Herald is that this person died. His name was given as Kaushik Chatterjee 45. It has an eye witness saying "he got into strife".

I found another report dated yesterday from the Northern Beaches Advocate which says:

"The 46-year-old man was with three friends at Flint and Steel Beach, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, when bystanders who were also at the remote beach saw him go into the water, apparently to collect a remote controlled boat that had stopped working.

The man had appeared to swim confidently according to the bystanders, so they had not watched him, but only moments later those at the beach became involved in rescue efforts as one of his friends was pulling him out of the water unconscious.

People from a nearby boat had come to shore and assisted with CPR on the man as others frantically called Triple Zero (000), guiding emergency services to the scene."

So definitely not a diving related accident.
