We just returned from Lake Amistad. What an incredible view and great place to dive.
For the Divers
This place has a variety from basic OW shallow stuff to deep technical walls. The Lake extends several mile all the way up the Pecos. There are a number of sunken landmarks and grottos to explore. Diving right now is an easy wetsuit with surface temps of 81F and temps to 64F @ 115'. Viz is a little iffy in the first 40' similar to Travis, but opens up huge. We have a dive guide with two boats very reasonable. A number of the better dives require a boat, but it's a very short trip. Mark was a great host with lot's of good info. Good shore diving too. Walk to into the water from the campsite.
For the explorer
There are several items of interest including two dry caves up the Pecos with cave paintings. Sonora has some nice caves and is a short drive from Del Rio.
For the Camper
Any number of spots along the lake to camp. All with great views and many with permanent buildings with showers and toilets. The sunset provides a colorful view over the hills and water.
For the non-camper
There are a number of cheap hotels minutes from the lake. La Quinta was just fine. It had a pool and free breakfast. Skillets next door was great for breakfast.
For the shopper
If you drive 290W to I-10 you'll pass through Fredericksburg. Lot's of knick-knack and antiques stores. Lot's of wineries along the way too.
For the driver
It's only 4 hours from Austin, 3.5 from San Antonio. Take I-10 West to Junction. Get on Hwy 377 and enjoy the scenic West Texas country. Turn left on Hwy 90 and in a few miles you are there. Great scenic drive.
For the fisherman/hunter
We didn't do any fishing but there is a huge fish and game industry. We saw lot's of fish including a nice size catfish. Easy to fish from shore and just as easy to find a guide.
We should organize something late November or early December when the weather is right for camping. What are your thoughts?
