I've never gotten a bill for customs duties. Ordered from them twice. Once for a Apeks atx-50, and another time I ordered a Vytec, compass, DIN adapter, and PC upload kit. Shipping costs are around $30 US. Takes about a week. And their customer service is much more responsive than Leisure Pro. Send them an email with a question and they will get back to you right away. I assume Leisure Pro will charge about $15 just to ship to Boston.

I recently purchased two Suunto Vytec’s from www.simplyscuba.co.uk
I got a call from someone asking what they were for customs purposes but did not get billed any import duty.

On the first “check out” dive, one of the computers failed after 20 minutes into the dive – it simply turned itself “off”. I went to Suunto’s web-site for warranty service and got their USA number in California. When I called there, I was told to return the computer to “simplyscuba” in the UK for warranty service. Suunto Finland’s technical rep actually suggested I “try the computer again”. I ignored this and returned the unit. It took four weeks to get a replacement but the “simplyscuba” people were easy to deal with and honored their warranty of paying for the overseas freight for warranty returns.

As some other equipment.

LP has their own Warranty and ill stand behind what they sell. At the same time, don't expect too many Warranty issues with your Suunto unit ;)

Ari :)

I bought a Stinger from Simply scuba last year. I also got a call from customs regardign the shipment. They asked me what it was for. I replied personal recreational use.

Never saw of heard anything after that except the unit showed up 2 days later.

Used it on a trip to Roatan. 3-4 dives a day for the week. Never missed a beat.

Liked it so much I just bought a Cobra on Ebay. The seller guaranteed it to work or he'd take it back. $500 for the unit, quick disconnect. compass, and PC interface. I've bought some stuff form LP. Was happy with both price & service. Called to see what they could do in terms of matching the pricing I ws seeing on eBay. At first they didnt move on the price, but about 10 days later the rep I deal with called to let me know they were having some "specials". Too late!.

Had the Cobra wet only once, and that was for the OW skills in a Rescue class, so no "real" diving with it yet. Actully registered 4 dives~ 3 of those doing the diver recovery at about 15 ft. and 1 to about 50 for the lost diver scenario. Nice computer.

Honestly, never really thought much about warranty. Don't think I sent the one in for my Stinger, come to think about it!

Anymore, electronics are for the most part reliable enough that if they work when you get them, they usually work far beyond any warranty period unless you abuse them. I build/upgrade PCs for a hobby. Found that to generally be the case. Ed Steele's post lends a support to that. Didn't work right from the get go.

ED ~ how's the replacement and the one that worked been doing?

I think ARI has it right. If it ain't broke when you get it, then you're probably going to be the cause of any failure ~ banging a rock or something ~ rather than the unit.

Just my perception. I own two now, and will probably be looking at buying at least one, and maybe two more Cobra's for my wife & daughter. (I like my Stinger so much I hate to give it up just because I have a Cobra now!)

But it's really an individual choice.

Dive safe =-)

Raybo,
I just got back from a dive trip to Bequia in the Grenadines. FYI, both the original Vytec that had previously had no problems plus the replacement unit I received under warranty worked fine.
