So I was looking to pick up a Suunto Cobra. I was thinking of picking it up from LeisurePro, but if I go that route I don't fall under Suunto's warrantee.

Has anyone had any experience with warrantee service through LeisurePro? As a po-ass college student, I like the hundreds-of-dollars of saving when I buy online, but at the same time I'm wary.

Also, has anyone ever had a dive computer serviced out of warrantee? Pretty expensive?

Thanks!

I have bought two SUUNTO computers from Leisurepro. Neither of them has ever hiccuped. When it was time to change the batterry on my Viper I pivked up the new battery at an LDS and simply followed the instructions. Roughly 100 dives later my Viper is still ticking along nicely.

OK, so I have been lucky. I've never had to bring an item in for warranty service. Nothing has ever malfunctioned. I bring my Leisurepro regs to an LDS for service and I just pay a little extra for parts. If one of my computers breaks I will take it to the LDS for a repair estimate. I will use the estimate to decide whether I repair or replace.

Buying from Leisurepro is a gamble. The MSRP for the Cobra is $750. Leisurepro sells the Cobra for $429. Am I willing to gamble to save $321 on my gear? I've done it before and I will almost certainly do it again.

I'm in the same position as you except I need to purchase 2 units (my wife and I just received our OW certification).

Does anyone have a link to the exact wording for the Suunto warrantee?

I found an LDS that will sell the Cobra for $585 which is considerably less than the $750 list but I'd still save $320 on the two units going to LeisurePro.

I figure LDS cannot repair a computer, only play middleman to the factory. So if LeisurePro will exchange a defective unit, it seems like the way to go.

Does anyone have experience with how LeisurePro handles returns of electronics?

You can go to www.suunto.com and follow the links to the page on the Cobra. Once there, just download the manual (PDF file). The warranty info is there. You will also find some really nice info there about the Cobra including a cool demo.

I just bought 2 Cobras for my wife and I from the LDS. I opted to pay more and buy through them for the piece of mind. But it was an expensive piece of mind. The LDS was extremely helpful to me for all theother equipment that I felt I "owed" them.

Good luck with your purchase and have fun. We leave on our first dive trip tomorrow. We are headed to Cozumel.

If you are looking to save, consider buying from Simply Scuba in the UK. Price is probably a little lower than LeisurePro, plus you get a valid warranty, allbeit a European warranty. Therefore, you can get warranty service on it, but you must ship it overseas- not a big deal.

Thanks tbg - the site is back up and if I coverted correctly (after removing the 17.5% VAT) the price is around $465 US.
