hi,

currently diving in Malapascua phillipines, I used Nitrox twice so far to shallow depth of 24m max with an MOD of 28. During the second dive, the first segment of the OLF indicator started blinking and kept blinking even after the dive although none of the other segments were illuminated. Also I dove for 56 minutes so couldn't possibly have suffered from oxygen toxicity. No alarm sounded. From the manual of the computer I could only read that the first segment if blinking indicates OTU(oxygen tolerance unit) has reached CNS(central nervous system) but in the example from the manual, there are 6 segments built up on the left side of the computer showing OLF. Can anyone help? What does a single blinking bar mean on the OLF gauge of the suunto vyper? thanks

froggie

The Vyper OLF calculation was discussed here - including what happens if you pass 1.4.

The OLF calculation itself is described in the manual.

3.3.3. Oxygen Limit Fraction, OLF
In addition to tracking diver's exposure to nitrogen,
the instrument tracks the exposure to oxygen, if set
to NITROX Mode. These calculations are treated as
entirely separate functions.
The Oxygen Limit Fraction (OLF) is a combination
of two methods tracking the oxygen toxicity: the
Central Nervous System Toxicity (CNS) and Oxygen
Tolerance Unit (OTU). Both fractions are scaled
so that the maximum exposure is expressed as 100%.
Each of the 11 segments represents 10%. The fraction
closest to the maximum limit is displayed.
When OTU% reaches the CNS% limit the lowest
segment starts to blink (Fig. 3.25). The OLF is calculated
based on the factors listed in chapter 6.
"Operating Principles".
Fig. 3.25 The lowest bar graph blinks to indicate that the OLF value shown relates to OTU.

In 6.3 of the manual there is a full page explaining the OLF display.

hi,

thanks for the reply. The thing is I never had more than a couple of segments build up so how can the bottom one start to blink? I think I'm going to contact suunto, I'm curious. Cheers,
