I just purchased a Suunto Sk7 wrist mount compass. The strap that came with it is terrible! I have reviewed other threads that suggest removing Suunto straps and replacing them with double 1/8 inch bungees. While these threads are helpful, the ones that I have looked at have been mostly geared to changing the strap on a Vyetec or Vyper computer. Does anyone have any specific advice, tips, directions and pictures that shows how they rigged their SK7? Thanks in advance for your input.

I don't have an SK-7, but I bungee rigged my Vytec. I would imagine it would be very similar as there would be two pins that hold each part of the strap in place. Just create two bungee loops of the appropriate size and feed them under the pins. Should be as simple as that.

Welcome to the board, Tom

Here are some pics of my bungified SK7 and Vytec. FWIW, I don't get the pins talk on the SK7 - my strap just sort of slid under the housing. I just pilled it out and re-threaded the Bungee.

Hopes this helps.

Mo2vation - that clears things up. I don't have an SK7 so I was only speculating that the straps were held by pins, but that clarifies it. My vytec looks the same as yours.

Thanks for the pictures. It looks pretty straightforward to rig the SK7 with bungees. I bought the materials this PM and when I get a chance I'll be getting rid od the strap.

By the way I ended up also getting the 1050 Pelican case that you recommended for my Vyper storage. As you know the compass fits in it too. It's real slick! Thanks again.

FWIW I did this to my SK7 but I only used 1 bungee strap, and was able to hide the knot inside the case.

Slick as a weasel. Why the manufacturers haven't figured this out, I don't know.

Great for the compass run on the OW course, where the $%^& store always seems to forget to give the students compasses - you can even swap it around underwater without any hassle. Only problem is keeping track of which student had it last, or the darn thing sometimes develops legs, as well.

"Oh, did I forget to give that back?"

doole once bubbled...

I'd guess it's because two bungee rings don't look as professional, and they start pilling after a little use, so looks even worse. If you're a company selling products, that's not how you want your product to look like.

But it sure is much more convenient! I tried out the bungee setup on my SK-7 a couple weeks ago, and I love it! :D

Do you guys bother to thread the bungie through surgical or rubber tubing to protect the bungie. Or does that add another failure point? I would think two bungie lines would be fail-safe.

In any case, this is pretty slick!
