I am a level one open water diver and I am in the market for some scuba gear. I am undecided on which computer to buy (D4 or Vyper 2). I plan on diving 4-10 a year. Does anybody have any feedback on these products? Thanks.

I'm quite happy with my Stinger (replaced now by D6)

According to the Suunto website, the Mosquito has been discontinued. The only Stinger that has been discontinued is the titanium version - the stainless version continues to be produced, alongside the D series computers.

The D4 appears to be intended as the Mosquito replacement - with basic functions. Another Suunto alternative in the same category would be the Gekko. The Viper 2 is a more versatile/expensive computer, and appears to be in the D6-D9 range.

OH. as far as pricing. I can buy either computer (DD4 or vyper 2) for the same price. Does anybody know how well either compter works in the water. As far as easy to read and operate,etc...

I opted for the D4 over the Vyper. It's smaller; about the size of the Mosquito. It's pretty easy to read the numbers when submerged, even for people whose eyesight is beginning to get out of whack (like me). Not a bad computer at all -- pretty easy to understand the readout and to switch between time, air, nitrox, logbook, and so on.

Realize that if you want to download your data to your home PC, you'll have to pay extra for the cable.

Recommend you go to the Suunto website, and compare the specs for both models, side by side. Either one will be more than sufficient for the type of diving you have indicated, and will also work nicely for more advanced diving (such as nitrox use) as well. It's a matter of personal preference between the two.

the D4 needs to be sent back for battery replacement the Vyper does not, the D4 is a watch computer the Vyper is a bigger wrist computer, the Vyper has more functions than the D4, as has been said go to the suunto website and use their comparison function and look at the two you are interested in side by side, that might make the decsion a little easier. Good luck.

The old Vyper was more comparable to the D4, if you can get the Vyper2 for the same price as the D4, I'd opt for the Vyper2. Both will do all the basics for the level you are at now, but down the line, if you get to the point where you'd like to do accelerated deco, for example, the Vyper2 has the two-gas mix option (like the D6), whereas the D4 will only do the one nitrox mix.

thnks for all the replies. yes, I did compre them at suunto's website. I just wanted to hear from someone who actually put the product to the test. my opnion is the Vyper 2 has more funstions but big which could be an advantage. The D4 is nice and sleek with less functions. I guess im leaning towarrds VYper 2.
