I just received this month's Alert Diver magazine (go DAN!) and there was an interesting article on regulator failures. One of the tables grabbed my attention, as it indicated that 19% of divers use Pony bottles or a redundant regulator, as opposed to 15% who use an integrated air/inflator.

The survey was done at scubaSTARnet.com.

Well, I'm learning how to do surveys for a non-profit I assist, so I thought I'd try my hand at gathering similar info. I'm making a distinction between pony bottle and redundant reg (which I guess is the classic cave doubles w/isolator valve).

I hope you'll take the survey, even though it's at SurveyMonkey. I'll let the survvey run for about a week and then report the results.

Alternate Air Sources and Regulator Failures

pretty painless....done.

Good luck with your survey, please post the results.

Done..Good luck. It surprises me to see how many operations accept octo's as an alternate air source.

Easy survey.

The only problem is that you'll get some 'self-selection' in your sample set :)

First of all, there were 42 responses, which is a rather small sample size, and subject to "self selection" so take the results with a grain of salt. However, 42 is the answer to life the universe and everything :-)

As to alt air sources:

octo 50%
pony 7%
redundant reg 14%
integrated air source 19%
other 10%

I was surprised that 23% of divers have had a reg failure requiring them to use their buddy's air supply. This may be explained that more than 30% of the respondents had more than 500 dives, 66% have more than 100 dives, and 38% have been diving more than 10 years. You dive long enough, you're going to have a failure, that's just the way the numbers are going to work out.

Thanks everyone for being my guinea pigs for my experiment with Survey Money!
