They did a review of defogs for masks a few years back that used a control and a baseline. They rightly pointed out which defogs couldn't outperform spit (literally). It had a clear methodology for rating them.
Its hard to test some scuba equipment in a controlled environment. Much of it comes down to the type of diving you are doing and your own preferences.
