You have a lot of choice on Utila Davey. There are dive centers all along the bay, ranging from cheap to pricey (with hotel accommodation). As a diver already I would say look for a dive center with more than one boat (you don't want to be limited by student divers), new boats, well maintained clean engines (this helps protect our delicate reef) - don't be afraid to ask to see, there is more than 1 dive center with quality equipment as well so ask to see the gear!
You will have a range accommodation options from the cheapest within the dive centers themselves. Some can offer only dormitories some have private rooms. Almost everyone offers a $3 night on the first night (usually in a dorm).
If you want a bit more comfort and privacy Ruby's is nice locally run Hotel with rooms ranging from $20 to $45, but seeing as you are going to be around for a month you might check out Freddy's Place as well which offers monthly apartments with and without A/C at a very reasonable price.
Some dive center's are on the ocean (some are on the lagoon) - on the ocean front you can really make use of the docks, etc swimming in the sea, kayaking, snorkeling, etc.
Also really check in on North Side trips - these are generally the best diving on Utila. Many dive centers claim North Side every day, but you should really dig into this. Ask to see the schedule board or ask to talk to other fun divers in the dive center to find out the reality of this. On Utila North Side means Turtle Harbor to Raggedy Cay and Rock Harbor - no the east and west ends of the island. North side is your only chance of whale shark encounters - last year the first two weeks of august we great for whale sharks.
Email me directly and I will be happy to tell you more.
