Looking for a moderately priced strobe for my Fuji Finepix F50 fd point and shoot with the Fuji WP-FXF50 underwater housing. I am going to Sipidan Water Village in July and would like to add a strobe. I shoot mostly macro and I have to say for the most part I have been extremely happy with the photo quality of this little P&S camera. I also love the Fuji housing.... very compact and rugged. I would like to keep the purchase under $500 if possible, because that's about what I have invested in the camera and case. Also, would like to be able to use the strobe on another P&S camera, should I decide to upgrade the camera in the future. Any and all suggestions/comments are welcome. Thanks!

I have several new P&S Lighting packages that will work for you.

If you mainly shoot macro one of the UltraMax packages will work fine, well under your budget. one of the Sea & Sea YS27DX sets will work as well, depending on whether or not you add a focus light.

Let me know if you have questions,
Jack

Thanks, Jack. As I have never used a strobe before, is it essential to have a focus light as well? I am trying to keep the entire camera/housing and strobe as small as possible. What about the Ikelite AF-35? I have read a little about it. How does it compare to the Sea and Sea YS27DX?

A focus light isn't essential, but you may be frustrated without it. You camera may not lock focus quickly or at all in low light, as well it's makes it easier for you to see. Pretty essential for night dives as well.

On your housing I believe you have a "hotshoe" style light mount. You could go with one of the single modular tray & arm sets and a Nano Lighting kit that mounts on it.

The YS27 is much more powerful than the AF35. The UltraMax UDXS strobe I have is also a good option at a great price.
