Hey guys,

I just bought a gates housing and Sony HC9 camera. Can anyone suggest a good carry case for the camera itself? What do you guys use? Lowepro? Sony bag? etc?

Thanks!

I have 2 types.

A waist bag is good for on the go shooting. Rotate the bag to the side/back when you are walking, hiking. Rotate it to the front to remove the camcorder and start shooting.

A backpack for traveling on the plane.

I have a backpack by Kata and a waist bag by Mountainsmith. Lowepro makes good bags, but they are expensive.

I have the Sony case. My camcorder is the same relative size as yours. It fits horizontally without a (big) battery. Some tapes, all the cables etc. below it. One pocket for batteries, front pocket for the charger, remote, hood, and one pocket for more tape. I can carry 10-12 tapes if packed right. There's a small mesh pocket in the lid that just holds the manual. The back pocket is useless though - I see that even Sony agrees as they changed it in the new model. Although it appears they've also shrunk the front pocket.

This is the one I have although I bought it for about $30 without all the accessories:

I don't know how helpful this will be, but I just use a carry-on bag for international travel. I put my HC7 inside the housing as I don't plan on using it enroute. I use zip-lock bags for cables, extra batteries and such. Pack this in my carry-on with some clothes to cushion things and a bag is one less thing to carry around.

Can't say a lot about local. My camcorder is almost exclusively for underwater video.

I like the Lowepro bags. You can find just about any size/config imaginable. You just have to think through how much stuff you want to carry around with you & find the bag that works best.

This might seem obvious, but I've found that cheap bags have cheap components (zippers, buckles, clips, sewing, etc) and tend to fall apart quickly.
