I can't believe that I just found this out. One of the reasons why I went with an Ikelite housing for my G10 is the TTL capability, and now I find out that this is ONLY operable in P, Av and Tv modes. I usually use manual mode, and had my C1& C2 modes set for this, in macro and normal focus respectively. I had wondered about the strobe output from my dual DS125's, thinking it was too much on several occasions. Any way to tell if the TTL circuitry is working other than just using it underwater? Is there a dry test I could try? Woody

The TTL will work fine in or out of the water. Just take some test photos and review the results. I originally opted for the Ikelite / G10 setup for the TTL capability but as I've grown to become more familiar with underwater photography I now shoot almost exclusively in manual. Given time, knowing what power to set your strobes for a particular shot becomes almost second nature.

The only reason I can think of that you can't do eTTL in M is that you have old strobes.

Otherwise there should not be any issue.

Who told you that you can't use eTTL on M?

I have never heard of that.

But, yes, you can test it on land. Set a single shutter speed and move through the f stops to see the effect. Dimly lit room helps.

Seach this site and you will find a good tutorial on how to do it.

Neither (e?)TTL or sTTL or TTL will work with the G10/11 in Manual mode.

The electronic/optical e/sTTL bootstraps the camera flash. The G10 does not have auto flash in manual exposure mode, only Min., Med., Max. strobe power levels (manual setting). See page 106, 182 of the G11 manual or similar in G10 manual.

Optical strobes simply bootstrap the camera flash, they mirror it, in hard wire TTL in Manual mode, there is no exposure information provided, the camera strobe is set at min/med/max and that is what the external strobe would sync per it's power setting you choose on the strobe head.

Some strobes, Inon D/Z and perhaps others, have an External Auto mode which does allow auto strobe exposure with the camera set in Manual mode (with resulting default strobe manual mode).

That is how I understand it to be.
