Both local divers and guests were invited to attend the March 23 Dive Against Debris event hosted by Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas. Thirty participants (25 divers and 5 crew) set out to help clean up the local waters as part of the ongoing initiatives of the non-profit Project AWARE Foundation.
According to one of the participants, “Our main items of local concern are fishing line, glass bottles and rope.  The reef was covered in fishing line so the divers carefully removed sections without disturbing the reef.  Other items removed included plastic bottles, fishing lures, plastic pipes, aluminum cans, strapping bands, rubber bands and tin cans.  One diver was very happy to find a brand new Trident fishing spear, perfect for getting Lion Fish!”
Stuart Cove’s operation is a strong supporter of the marine environment, regularly creating artificial reefs and hosting educational programs for staff and local divers. Volunteers for this most recent event included divers from Lyford Cay International School, the Bahamas Dive Club and The Nature Conservancy.
