Both Cobra and Mosquito are identical in the NDLs. At the most liberal they compare to the NAUI and Navy tables as follows:

Depth/ft. Suunto NAUI Navy
40' 120min. 130min. 200min.
50' 69min. 80min. 100min.
60' 50min. 55min. 60min.
70' 36min. 45min. 50min.
80' 28min. 35min. 40min.
90' 22min. 25min. 30min.
100' 17min. 22min. 25min.
110' 13min. 15min. 20min.
120' 10min. 12min. 15min.
130' 9min. 8min. 10min.
140' 7min. ------------ 10min.
150' 6min. ------------ 5min.
160' - ------------------- 5min.
170' - ------------------- 5min.
180' - ------------------- 5min.
190' - ------------------- 5min.

From the instruction manual of both the mosquito and cobra: "NDL for the first dive to a single depth, are slightly more conservative than those permitted by the U.S. Navy tables" big ol' slight there!

BUT, it's RGBM model is 9 groups 2.5 to 480 min. tracked up to 100 hours.....with max accent rate of 30fpm...... so I like it.

SeaJay once bubbled...

Really? And here I thought you were gonna give me heck for wanting a computer. :D

Oh, wait... Lemme guess... It lives in guage mode only. :D

All joking aside, what's your experience? How's that Vyper work? Do you use it at all? Would you, given the scenario I painted above?

I'd hate to blow mucho bucks on something just to get a very expensive bottom timer. :(
I use it for NDL recreational dives...for anything else it lives in gauge mode. I like it..does what I want it to. My buddy has an Oceanic and it is laughable how conservative the Vyper is compared to his computer though...they are really different.

In fact, that was specifically my thought process, too... The Vytec vs. the Oceanic. That seems to represent the two extremes of the bunch.

That chart above showing the US Navy vs. Suunto vs. NAUI tables is really, really interesting. That's great, solid information right there... And the real reason why I am on this board. Thanks for the great info!

Well, I can tell that, if I do get the Vytec like I'm talking about, I can assure you that the first thing I'm doing is "tuning" it so as to not be so conservative. The above chart looks pretty darn good... In fact, a little conservative even in it's most liberal setting.

Sounds silly, but I haven't really looked into the Oceanics much... Although I've heard some really great things about them, including their liberal charts and their price, as well as their easily understood and operated displays. What's y'all's experience with them? Do you like them as well as the Vytec/Cobras? Is it possible to use them for proper (real) decompression if you accidentally go over the NDL?

O-ring, I'm surprised. But it's very cool to see that you apparently use the computer the same way that I think I would...

My first computer ever the Oceanic Trans Plus flooded on the surface of my Dive 1 open water. On the boat (because my wise instructor thought in advance) there was a backup console I used to finish my dives. I returned the Oceanic that evening and traded it in for the Cobra.

I currently dive that same Cobra. But since that bad experience with a hoseless I have purchased a Cochran Gemini Plus and I dive both computers now. Hands down the Cobra is the best of the two.

However, because I love the features of the hoseless - I am seriously eyeballing that Vytec. Awesome!

I got 100% DIR in the test!!!
BUT, I am 100% stroke and proud of it
Most of the stroke gear shown is what I have and I'm still here.
I believe that calling someone a stroke because you don't agree with them, or think your better than them is only showing how insecure you are. So many DIR converts must be insecure.

I had a buddy years ago {really I did :D } that went and got all the latest safety gear. He was the first one around here with doubles, he took deep, wreck and cave courses. He could tell you more about diving than anyone I know, and he liked to talk. He use to put me down, until I pulled his butt out of the St Clair river barely alive. On 4 other dives "buddys" had to get him out of situations he was "trained" for. He no longer dives. This was before GUE, DIR. but at the time his gear was the best.

My point is that DIR gear does not make you a better diver or safer.

GUE and DIR have many great ideas and are making the sport safer but the attitude of many DIR guys "SUCK" and create fear in order to "sell" their concept.

Until the "I'm better than you" attitude changes. I remain a stroke and proud of it.
