Hi, and welcome to the scuba board:

With the Canon S50 and the Ikelite DS 50, and I would guess with the Inon, you have to check to be sure that the setup is compatible with the pre-flash from the Canon (per the Ikelite site: http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/dsensors.html). I have found the Ikelite webpage on this topic a bit confusing. You can either choose a manual flash (set flash intensity manually in 1/10th increments, still triggered by the Canon's built in flash) or their newer digital TTL sensor, which the same page says is compatible with "any camera". I don't know which is better with the S50 (anyone else out there who can help in that regard?) Depending on the associated arms and so forth, the DS 50 should run around $450. Let us know what your experience is like, whichever strobe you get.

Followup: I wrote to Ikelite, they say with the S50 camera and the DS-50 strobe that you should go with the manual controller. How's that been working for you Alison? As for the Inon, you can get it to sense both pre-flash and flash. I've heard elsewhere that given the short recycle time between preflash and main flash, that you might not get the full range of strobe power however. What's the low down, Mark?

The Ikelite also has a switch to sense both preflash and the main flash only.
With the Canon Powershot cameras, you do need the manual controller. I started off with the TTL (because that's what someone at Ikelite told me to get) and it wouldn't work. They sent me the manual controller and all is well now.

There are four strobes I would like at.

Sea and Sea YS-90DX (I recommend this one as #1)
Ikelite DS-50
Ikelite DS-125
Inon 180

All are great strobes, however the Inon 180 cannot be used with a standard sync cord later on if you upgrade cameras.

I have personally chosen to stick with the Sea and Sea line. I like the size of the strobes and the fact they are compatible with everything.

Feel free to email me with any questions.

" I wrote to Ikelite, they say with the S50 camera and the DS-50 strobe that you should go with the manual controller. How's that been working for you Alison?" Slingshot

Well due to bad weather and a variety of other obligations today was the first day underwater with the Ikelite Strobe, geting exposure right via the manual controller was not a problem, aiming the storbe - both to illuminate the subject and avoid backskatter will take continued application - a focus light (which Ikelite does not have as part of standard) might help but I am not unhappy wiht the first 40 minutes of experimentation.

Just started using a DS-125 with the manual controller and an S230 until I get my housing for the 10D. Similar experience. Switched from the TTTL controller because the flash on someof the powershots is too fast for the TTL controller to fire right.

However some Powershots will work and as always call Ikelite for final confirmation of this. They are usually always quite helpful.
