Hi, I am very new to this... So I appreciate any help or advice. I actually have not shot underwater yet but am planning on it. I just ordered a nikonos V. I plan on having it serviced and I'd like to get a strobe for it as well. The person I talked to about the servicing of the nikonos told me the strobes are mostly plastic and don't need servicing. They either work or they don't. Is this correct? I'd hate to get a strobe of eBay. Have this thinking and ruin it. Also a strobe I have my eye on is a marine sunk 2400 ttl, anyone know of it? If interested you can see some of my above land photography at

Thanks for any help!

I assume you are referring to the "SUNPAK MARINE AUTO 2400 TTL STROBE" currently listed on Ebay for $100? This is twenty year old technology and you are pairing it with an even older model camera. Servicing equipment this old may be difficult simply due to being able to find someone who still understands it and be able to get replacement parts should they be needed.

As far as newer strobes, I'm not sure if I follow your comment. Newer model strobes do still need repaired on occaision and they can be serviced. Just check with the underwater photo equipment dealers (ReefPhoto, Backscatter, etc.) and they can point you in the right direction. And as far as them being plastic, so is the unit you are looking at. Plastic has some significant advantages in the marine environment. Most newer strobes however may have difficulty connecting to an (for lack of a better word) antique film camera as they are designed for the digital world.

why shoot film? I still have a few of my nik 2's and 5's here and have not used them in at least 7 years..cost of film is a good reason. what I could spend on film and developing on 1 caribbean trip ( 10 to 15 rolls) can come close to equal a digital camera , or at least pay for a good part of it.
As to a strobe, rather than spend $ on an obsolete strobe that will work for the nik 5,but not on any digital camera, why not get a ikelite strobe that can do both? If using a wal get a ike 160/161 strobe. If using standard lens/macro get a ike ds51..both can be used with the nik 5 and any digital camera and they both have ttl..
