So I am a complete noobie to photography, let alone underwater photography. What are some good strobes that would work with this camera in the Sony MPK-WEB housing? What qualities should I be looking for in a strobe? How will I know if it fits my camera/housing?

I know this isn't very useful, but I too have the W290 / WPK set up, and had the same question. Just last night I bought a Sealand 980 photo / video light to use instead of a strobe. I'll dive with it this weekend and post back what I think. It seems to be a reasonably cheap solution...

I didn't get enough shots to really form an opinion. While using it to "fill" at shallower depths I noticed a definite blue cast, so I need to play with the white balance. My deeper shots were marred by really poor viz, so it looks like I need to do some more diving. Darn :)

Well, let's see if I can post a picture here...

After using the video light for a few dives, I like it. It doesn't have as wide of a beam as I would prefer, and I still have some experimenting to do, but overall I think it will work out ok. As I recall, I shot this juvenile wolf eel with the camera in Program mode, and I set up the white balance to the high color-temperature fluorescent setting to counteract the blueish tint of the leds.
