My old point and shoot camera is on its way out and I've only ever used it with its own flash which made me get creative with camera angles if nothing else.

So I'm getting a Canon G9 with (probably) ikelite housing (for wet lenses eventually), and for info (as it may affect suggestions/replies) most of my photos will be Macro during the day, with some "Scene" shots on a purely recreational style diving (aka not technical).

Since I am upgrading, I am looking into strobes but haven't used them before. so have a few questions that I would like some advice on from those more experienced than I to help me decide which strobe I will finally buy.

I'm aware if I go with the ikelite housing and don't use the ikelite strobes I won't get the TTL option, but that aside, which (if any) strobes (or strobe makes) make for a reasonable function/power output in a smallish size? (I travel alot both for work and diving so will be frequently carrying them with me in luggage.)

I've seen set ups that have 1 strobe, 1 strobe and one spotting light and 2 strobes, what would you recommend to start with if you've never used them before?

I've also seen the strobe arms set as jointed (ball sockets) in the middle, and those that appear to be multi jointed to give a "bendy" effect, is there any specific benefit to either option?

Finally, how would you rate TTL above other forms of flash triggering (i.e. as a priority for choosing the strobe)?

Any comments, suggestions, examples of your own experience or links to sites that may some helpful answers is much appreciated.
