Hi,

We have a Canon G9 in an Ikelite housing and want to add a strobe.

We dont want an Ikelite strobe for a few reasons including the fact that it uses a proprietry battery pack.

The Inon strobes are looking favourite at the moment and the price difference between the D2000 and Z240 is not enough to be off putting so the Z240 is in the lead right now.

So here are the questions we'd appreciate some advice on:

Z240 or D2000??

Fibre optic cable or Ikelite bulkhead to Inon sync cable #4118.1??

Just realised the Ikelite sync cable only connects to the Z240, does this allow STTL or not? (apologies - not as camera savvy as the wife!)

The hot shoe, Ikelite bulkhead through to the Z240 would seem the easier connection compared to using a fibre optic.

Any other advice or potential issues???

Thanks :D

Non-Ikelite Strobe Use

Strobes from INON or SEA & SEA can be connected with the following sync cords:

#4118.1 One strobe to Ikelite Housing
#4118.2 Two strobes to Ikelite Housing

These cords connect sync circuit only, providing only manual strobe operation. TTL is not possible with these strobes and cords.
We do not have sync cords for the new six conductor Sea & Sea YS55ettl strobe.

Thanks for the link - I've looked all through ikelites site but missed that page.

It was a pop-up page. ;)

The one advantage that you get with the better Ikelite housings is that you can do TTL with their strobes. But once you get familiar with firing flashes in manual on dry land, you begin to see that shooting TTL isn't the big deal you might expect.

As always, YMMV.

The Ikelite DS-51 uses AA batteries like the others you are considering, and allows full TTL flash operation with your camera. It is an excellent choice if you already have the ikelite housing.

If you buy an Inon Z240 or D2000, or the Sea & Sea YS11a, it would be best to use fiber optic to them. You can't have hardwired TTL flash with them on the Ikelite housing, which is a major limitation. With fiber, you have simulated TTL flash operation, which seems to work rather well for most.
