Strange octagonal tank valve

Just returned from diving in the South Pacific. The dive shops there use compensated aluminum tanks with a strange octagonal "standard" valve. If you don't seat your first stage correctly (less depth than regular standard valve seats) you may have trouble with air delivery at depth. What gives? Anyone have experience with this? We have never had any problems like that anywhere else.
